Ayo Dosunmu Exceeds Expectations for Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves’ acquisition of Ayo Dosunmu to bolster their guard options has proven more successful than anticipated. While he was expected to provide extra depth and utilise his all-around skills, Dosunmu has become a key player for the team.

Dosunmu’s March Surge

Dosunmu has been in impressive form in March, posting averages of 14.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists, while shooting 54.4 percent from the field, 45.7 percent from three-point range and 86.7 percent from the free throw line. In the past three games without Anthony Edwards, Dosunmu is averaging 19.7 points. This indicates his ability to elevate his game when required. His skillset, which includes finishing, three-point shooting, playmaking, speed, and defence, has made him one of the Timberwolves’ most impactful players.

Dosunmu vs DiVincenzo

Donte DiVincenzo shares some similarities with Dosunmu, particularly in their roles on the court. However, Dosunmu offers distinct advantages, notably in finishing and creating his own shots. Dosunmu can scale up his game, whereas DiVincenzo performs best when playing alongside other strong players.

During the Timberwolves’ past three games without Edwards, DiVincenzo has averaged 7.3 points, 4 assists, and 2.7 rebounds, while making just 25 percent of his outside shots. DiVincenzo remains a valuable player. However, his game is not as suited to taking on a bigger offensive role as Dosunmu’s. DiVincenzo scores primarily from three-pointers, with 76.3 percent of his field goal attempts coming from beyond the arc. Just 10.7 percent of DiVincenzo’s shots come at the rim, and he converts only 58.4 percent of them.

In contrast, 28.6 percent of Dosunmu’s shots are at the rim, and he converts 66.7 percent of these attempts. Dosunmu provides the Timberwolves with a rim-attacking guard, a dimension they have lacked for an extended period. He also contributes to a faster pace of play and more transition opportunities.

Shot Creation and Playmaking

Dosunmu excels in shot creation. He can score at all three levels and create opportunities for himself and others. DiVincenzo is an excellent movement shooter. Dosunmu ranks in the 73rd percentile points per isolation possessions per NBA.com, while DiVincenzo ranks in the 4th percentile for this stat.

While both players are capable playmakers, Dosunmu is better equipped to handle lead playmaking responsibilities when necessary.

Defensive Impact

DiVincenzo contributes defensively through hustle and playmaking. However, Dosunmu is a stronger point-of-attack defender and overall more effective on the defensive end.

DiVincenzo is still a fantastic role player. He should remain in the starting lineup for continuity purposes once Ant returns. Dosunmu provides elements that DiVincenzo does not.
