The New York Islanders are set to move their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate from Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Hamilton, Ontario, according to an announcement made on Thursday. The move is planned for next season.
The relocation is subject to approval by the AHL Board of Governors.
Hamilton Set to Welcome Islanders’ AHL Affiliate
If the move receives the green light, the team currently known as the Bridgeport Islanders will make their new home at TD Coliseum in Hamilton. The arena recently underwent significant renovations last autumn.
The franchise has stated that information regarding a team name, logo, and ticketing for the Hamilton market will be revealed at a later date. This is also pending AHL approval.
Management’s Perspective on the Move
Islanders general manager and executive vice president Mathieu Darche shared his enthusiasm about the potential move. “We are excited to make Hamilton our primary affiliate in the American Hockey League,” Darche said in a statement.
Darche also highlighted the city’s support. “The support the city has shown our organisation throughout this transition has been incredible.”
He further commented on the facilities and fanbase. “We look forward to having our top young talent play in front of such a strong fanbase inside the newly renovated, world-class TD Coliseum and we are committed to establishing ourselves in the community to engage a new generation of hockey fans.”
End of an Era in Bridgeport
The Islanders’ top minor-league affiliate has been based in Bridgeport for the past 25 years.
The move to Hamilton marks a new chapter for the organisation’s AHL operations.
