Lakers’ Defensive Prowess Boosted by Dončić’s Improved Form

The Lakers are currently riding a wave of success, having secured nine victories in their last 10 games. A key factor in this impressive run has been their defence, which currently ranks second in the league. Their defensive improvements have seen them outscore opponents by 14.6 points per 100 possessions.

Head coach JJ Redick has emphasised the importance of players embracing their defensive responsibilities.

Dončić’s Defensive Contribution

Luka Dončić’s defensive capabilities have been a focal point of discussion. Despite his offensive brilliance, his contribution on the defensive end has been critical to the Lakers’ recent success.

Redick has praised Dončić’s defensive efforts, stating, “Overall he’s been a good defender for us.” He added that when Dončić switches onto the ball, the points allowed per possession have been under 0.9, making him one of the best perimeter defenders on the team.

Redick noted, “He’s been more active with rotations and being physical with our switching groups. With him, it’s to be solid, engaged, do our rules, and he’s smart and can execute that at a high level. When he’s fully on defensively, he can guard the basketball. We’ve seen him do it against everybody in this league. We trust him.”

The narrative surrounding Dončić’s defence has been steadily improving over the past few seasons. Previously, it was considered a weakness, particularly during the 2024 Finals when he was frequently targeted by the Boston Celtics. His defensive performance became a key area of focus for both him and the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Adjustments and Defensive Strategy

Dončić’s arrival in Los Angeles, alongside Austin Reaves and LeBron James, raised questions about the Lakers’ overall balance. The addition of Deandre Ayton, another offensive-minded player, further fuelled concerns about a potential lack of defensive focus.

The Lakers rank 20th in defensive rating this season, highlighting the challenges of balancing the roster. However, Dončić’s improved physical condition has allowed him to play a crucial role in Redick’s evolving defensive schemes. Dončić reportedly lost over 20 pounds during the offseason.

The Lakers’ victory over the Rockets saw them successfully neutralise Kevin Durant in the halfcourt. Durant was limited to just 1-for-5 shooting in the second half, with six turnovers.

Lakers’ Defensive Limitations

The Lakers’ roster isn’t necessarily filled with defensive specialists. They are not a particularly strong rebounding or shot-blocking team, ranking 25th in blocks and 28th in rebounds.

The overwhelming takeaway from the contest was Los Angeles’ ability to neutralise Kevin Durant in the halfcourt.

The Lakers are playing their best brand of basketball at the right time.
