LAFC advanced to the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals after a dramatic 3-2 aggregate victory over Costa Rican side Alajuelense. David Martinez’s late goal secured the win in the Round of 16.
Martinez’s Late Strike Sinks Alajuelense
The match saw Alajuelense take an early lead in the series finale at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto. Santiago Van Der Putten scored via a rebound header within the first five minutes, putting Alajuelense ahead 2-1 on aggregate.
Alajuelense maintained their lead into the second half. However, LAFC’s Nathan Ordaz equalised in the 51st minute after receiving a pass from Mark Delgado and firing a first-time shot into the net.
Black & Gold Set for Cruz Azul Clash
Martinez then scored from distance just before the final whistle. This sent LAFC through to the next round.
The victory means LAFC will face Cruz Azul in the quarterfinals. Cruz Azul are the defending CCC title-winners.
Ordaz on Target for LAFC
After a 1-1 draw at BMO Stadium in Leg 1, LAFC found themselves behind early in the second leg. Van Der Putten’s early goal gave Alajuelense the advantage.
Nathan Ordaz’s equaliser in the 51st minute proved vital. This set the stage for Martinez’s late winner.
LAFC will now prepare for a clash against LIGA MX’s Cruz Azul in the next round.
