Stone Cold Steve Austin cemented his place in WWE history on June 23, 1996. After winning the King of the Ring tournament by defeating Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts, Austin delivered a speech that launched ‘Austin 3:16’ into the wrestling lexicon.
‘Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!’
This line capped off a promo that helped launch one of the most legendary WWE careers.
From ‘Stunning’ to ‘Stone Cold’
Steve Austin had already established himself in professional wrestling before joining WWE in 1996. He was previously known as ‘Stunning’ Steve Austin in WCW. During his time in WCW, he teamed with Brian Pillman as part of the Hollywood Blonds, capturing tag team gold, and also became the United States and WCW Television champion.
Following a brief period in ECW, Austin transitioned to WWE, initially appearing as ‘The Ringmaster’. The ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin persona was born in March 1996. With his black boots, black trunks, and no-nonsense attitude, the anti-authority, foul-mouthed character resonated with fans.
King of the Ring and the Birth of a Catchphrase
Although the ‘Stone Cold’ character debuted earlier in the year, his popularity exploded at the King of the Ring PLE on June 23. Austin’s victory over Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts, who integrated Biblical preaching into his character, set the stage for a career-defining promo.
‘You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn’t get you anywhere. Talk about your psalms, talk about John 3:16 … Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!’
The ‘Stone Cold’ shirts emblazoned with ‘Austin 3:16’ became a sensation. Austin became one of the most popular superstars in WWE history.
Championships and Legacy
Following his King of the Ring victory and the iconic promo, Austin achieved numerous accolades. He became a six-time WWE champion, two-time Intercontinental champion, and four-time WWE tag team champion. He is also the only superstar to win three Royal Rumble matches. In 2009, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin transcended professional wrestling, becoming a pop culture icon.
