Weather Disrupts THE PLAYERS Championship Opening Round

The opening round of THE PLAYERS Championship faced weather disruptions at TPC Sawgrass.

Round 1 Suspended Due to Rain and Darkness

Heavy rain in the TPC Sawgrass area caused the suspension of the first round at 12:09 p.m. Play resumed at 12:30 p.m. after a 21-minute weather delay.

The first round was later suspended for darkness at 7:37 p.m. It is scheduled to resume Friday at 8:50 a.m.

Four players have yet to complete their first round. Austin Smotherman, a co-leader, will have a birdie putt on No. 9.

Forecast Calls for More Storms

The 52nd edition of THE PLAYERS Championship got underway on Thursday, with weather immediately becoming a factor. The forecast calls for likely thunderstorms with scattered showers on Thursday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Dry weather is expected for Friday and Saturday with cooler temperatures and breezy conditions.

Scattered thunderstorms return to the forecast on Sunday.

Afternoon Tee Times Delayed

Rain moved over the course, but players prepared to resume play. All Round 1 afternoon tee times have been delayed 30 minutes.

Players were held in place while the system passed over the Ponte Vedra Beach area.

The second round will begin as scheduled at 7:40 a.m. on Friday.
