The BetMcLean Cup final between Linfield and Glentoran is highly anticipated, marking the first cup final clash between the Belfast ‘Big Two’ rivals in 16 years. A large crowd is expected at Windsor Park for what promises to be a thrilling occasion.
The final offers an added incentive: qualification for the Irish Premiership’s European play-off final in May. This is the first time this prize has been offered to the cup winner.
The match will be broadcast live on BBC Sport NI across various platforms, including BBC Two NI, BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website, and the BBC app. Coverage begins at 14:35 GMT, with Stephen Watson hosting alongside analysts David Jeffrey, Paul Leeman, and Jim Magilton. Commentary will be provided by Thomas Kane and Colin Coates, with Nicola McCarthy reporting from pitchside.
A Chance to End a Drought for Glentoran
Linfield holds the record for the most wins in the competition, aiming for their 13th title. After an 11-year drought, they won in 2019 against Ballymena United and have since secured back-to-back victories in 2023 and 2024.
Glentoran, a seven-time winner, last tasted victory in 2010, defeating Coleraine in a penalty shootout. They reached the final again 15 years later, only to lose 1-0 to Cliftonville after extra time last year.
In addition to their final wins, Linfield have been runners-up three times, while Glentoran have finished as runners-up on six occasions.
How the Teams Reached the Final
Linfield’s journey to the final began with a 2-0 win against Queen’s University. They then faced a tough challenge from H&W Welders, requiring extra time to secure a 6-3 victory. David Healy’s team went on to defeat Newry City 3-2 and Ballymena United 1-0 to reach the final.
Glentoran started their cup run with a 1-0 away win against Institute. They then overcame Crusaders 2-1 in the last 16.
- Linfield beat Queen’s University 2-0
- Linfield beat H&W Welders 6-3 after extra time
- Glentoran beat Institute 1-0
The Glens’ quarter-final against Cliftonville at the Oval ended 1-1 after extra time.
