Aussie tennis young gun Talia Gibson is enjoying a sparkling run of form that has earned her A$270,000. Her success is set to deliver an enormous rankings rise.
Gibson Claims Major Scalp at Indian Wells
The 21-year-old defeated world No.7 Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round of Indian Wells. Gibson took down the Italian 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 and claimed the first top-10 WTA win of her budding career.
Gibson’s victory over Paolini follows straight-sets wins over American Ann Li and Russian world No.11 Ekaterina Alexandrova. She also triumphed over Danish world No.17 Clara Tauson in three sets.
She’s carved a hole through the draw of the prestigious Californian tournament as an Indian Wells qualifier.
Prize Money and Ranking Boost
A $1.3 million pool of prize money is on offer for the women’s players at Indian Wells.
Gibson has guaranteed herself $270,000 for reaching the quarter-finals and will pocket $474,000 if her magnificent run extends to the semi-finals. Her next opponent is Czech world No.14 Linda Nosková.
The Australian’s total career prize money prior to Indian Wells came to $325,000, earned over the course of seven years.
Gibson is now sitting 67th in the live WTA rankings, up from world No.112.
Reaction to the Win
“Yeah, gosh, [I] still haven’t processed it all,” Gibson said after her latest win.
“I think [I’m] just super proud [of] what I have been able to achieve over these last two weeks.
“Yeah, honestly, I’m still pretty speechless that I made it this far.”
Gibson has become the first Indian Wells qualifier to reach the quarter-finals in 11 years.
She is the third-highest Australian in the live WTA rankings behind world No.31 Maya Joint and world No.65 Daria Kasatkina, the player who switched her allegiance from Russia in March last year.
