Emiliano Martinez is bracing for a hostile reception in his return to Lille. The Argentine goalkeeper, who plays for Aston Villa, is set to face the wrath of Lille fans.
Lille Fans Vow to Make Martinez’s Return ‘Hell’
Lille supporters are still incensed by Martinez’s antics during the World Cup final. His behaviour during the penalty shootout against France in the 2022 World Cup final, and the aftermath, have not been forgotten.
One fan, Romain, an ultra, stated, “We are going to make him live hell, hoping that the team will also hurt him.” The animosity stems from Martinez’s actions after Argentina’s World Cup victory over France.
This isn’t the first time Martinez has encountered such hostility in France. He previously faced similar jeers when LOSC hosted Aston Villa in the Europa Conference League quarter-final return leg.
Previous Encounter Fuels the Fire
During that match, Martinez appeared galvanised by the hostile atmosphere. He saved penalty kicks from Nabil Bentaleb and Benjamin André.
His provocative gestures and dances even earned him a yellow card, his second of the match. Olivier Létang, the Lille president, entered the pitch in a state of confusion.
Létang stated, “I thought he would have a red, but the fourth official explained to us that during the penalty shootout, it did not count (law 10.3 of the rules of the game).”
Létang added, “I don’t want to spend time talking about this boy who does not have the attitude of a very, very high-level sportsman.” Unai Emery defended Martinez, saying that “the supporters insulted him for one hundred and twenty minutes but, even if he puts himself in front of the opponents, if he has this attitude, he always remains under control.”
Martinez’s Recent Form and Potential Transfer
Martinez’s recent form has been a concern. He was seemingly ready to leave Villa Park, greeting the public with his wife and children thinking it was his last. He was reportedly close to joining Manchester United, but negotiations failed.
His form has dipped, and he shares the record with Nick Pope for errors leading to a goal this season in the Premier League (3).
FA Investigation Adds to Martinez’s Troubles
Martinez is also under investigation by the FA for allegedly violating betting regulations as an ambassador for an Argentine site.
He is also reportedly slowed by muscular problems.
Lille will hope to exploit Martinez’s current struggles in their upcoming match.
