Maja Chwalińska achieved a significant victory in Antalya, demonstrating her superior tennis skills.
Chwalińska’s Tactical Game Overwhelms Kumru
Maja Chwalińska, the Polish player seeded eighth, faced 17-year-old Ada Kumru in Antalya. Kumru, a Turkish player, often receives “wild cards” to gain experience against higher-ranked opponents. Last year, Kumru was ranked 60th in the ITF junior rankings and had recently competed in the Australian Open juniors.
Chwalińska’s game is characterised by technical prowess. She is known for her skill in executing drop shots and lobs. Her ability to vary the tempo of play and force her opponents to run is a key aspect of her strategy, particularly effective against players who are not powerful hitters.
From the outset, Chwalińska put Kumru under pressure, frequently using drop shots and lobs. Kumru struggled to respond effectively to this tactic.
A Swift First Set Victory
The fourth game presented Kumru with an opportunity to win a game. She took a 40-30 lead. However, she then hit a return from Chwalińska into the doubles alley. Chwalińska did not allow another opportunity, winning the set 6-0 in 29 minutes, having won 27 of 39 points.
Chwalińska Seals the Match
The second set mirrored the first, with Chwalińska maintaining control. At 4-0, Kumru had another chance to win a game when Chwalińska was serving. Kumru managed to keep the ball in play, capitalising on errors from her opponent. Chwalińska then hit a forehand into the net, making the score 15-40. However, Chwalińska recovered with a well-executed drive. She then forced another error from Kumru, levelling the score. Chwalińska then extended her lead to 5-0.
Chwalińska has won several matches with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline in her career. Most recently, she achieved this at the WTA 125 event in Quito just over three months ago.
Kawa Advances in Antalya
Katarzyna Kawa is in her third week on the Turkish Riviera. She reached the semi-final of the WTA 125 Megasaray Hotels Open in the previous week. She has now reached the 1/8 finals. She defeated Despina Papamichail of Greece 6-1, 6-3, securing match point after 59 minutes.
