Mike Boynton Jr. has been named head coach of the University of Michigan men’s basketball programme, an announcement made on Friday (July 10) by Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel. This significant appointment sees Boynton Jr. agree to a two-year contract to lead the Wolverines’ programme, where he will serve as the David and Meredith Kaplan Men’s Basketball Head Coach.
Boynton Jr. is set to enter his third season in Ann Arbor, having already played a crucial role in guiding Michigan through what has been described as one of the greatest two-year stretches in programme history. Over his first two seasons on staff, the Wolverines established an impressive 64-13 record, demonstrating consistent performance and success on the court.
A Period of Unprecedented Success
During Boynton Jr.’s time as an assistant, Michigan achieved remarkable milestones in collegiate basketball. The programme secured the 2025 Big Ten Tournament championship, a testament to their competitive strength and ability to perform under pressure. This was followed by winning the 2026 Big Ten regular-season title, further cementing their dominance within the conference.
The pinnacle of this period was undoubtedly claiming the programme’s second NCAA national championship. Boynton Jr. was particularly instrumental in the historic 2025-26 national championship season, which saw the Wolverines achieve a school-record 37-3 record. This extraordinary season also included capturing the Big Ten regular-season championship with a conference-record 19-1 mark, leading to the programme’s first NCAA national championship in 37 years.
Leadership and Vision Endorsed
The appointment of Mike Boynton Jr. has been met with strong endorsements from the university’s leadership. Warde Manuel, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics, expressed clear confidence in Boynton Jr.’s capabilities to lead the programme. Manuel stated, “Mike is a veteran assistant with strong head coaching experience and a clear understanding of the standard we expect at Michigan.”
Manuel further highlighted Boynton Jr.’s contribution during his assistant coaching role, acknowledging him as “an invaluable member of our staff, bringing stability, leadership and perspective during an important period of success.” He also underscored the unity within the team, adding, “Our players and staff believe in his vision, are committed to his leadership and are excited for the opportunity to pursue great success together this season.”
University of Michigan President Domenico Grasso also offered his backing for the new head coach. Grasso affirmed, “Coach Boynton has demonstrated exceptional leadership, unwavering integrity, and a deep commitment to the development of student-athletes throughout his career.” He conveyed his confidence that Boynton Jr. “will build on our winning tradition, strengthen our culture of excellence, and lead our programme in a way that reflects the very best of the University of Michigan’s values.”
Responding to his new role, Boynton Jr. conveyed his gratitude and dedication. “I’m grateful to Warde for his confidence and thankful for the opportunity to lead this program,” he said. He reflected on the established foundation, stating, “We have built a championship culture and a standard that everyone associated with this program takes great pride in.” Boynton Jr. concluded by expressing his eagerness: “We have an outstanding group of players, and I’m excited to get to work and continue the success we’ve established together.”
Developing Elite Talent
One of the key aspects of Boynton Jr.’s reputation is his standing as one of the nation’s top player-development coaches. This expertise was clearly demonstrated during his two seasons at Michigan, where he was instrumental in mentoring four first-round NBA Draft selections.
The impact of his player development efforts was particularly evident in the 2026 NBA Draft, which saw three Michigan players selected as lottery picks. Morez Johnson Jr. was chosen at No. 9, Yaxel Lendeborg at No. 11, and Aday Mara at No. 12. Prior to this, Danny Wolf was a first-round selection in the 2025 NBA Draft, picked at No. 27.
This remarkable achievement meant Michigan became just the fifth programme since the NBA Draft Lottery expanded in 2004 to produce three lottery selections in a single draft, highlighting the exceptional talent nurtured under his guidance.
Defensive Transformation Under Boynton’s Direction
Beyond his work in player development, Boynton Jr. also held a critical role as Michigan’s defensive coordinator. In this capacity, he was pivotal in transforming the Wolverines into one of the nation’s premier defensive teams, significantly enhancing their performance on that side of the court.
The effectiveness of his defensive strategies was reflected in national rankings, with Michigan ranked 12th nationally in KenPom adjusted.
With the signing of his two-year contract, Mike Boynton Jr. now takes the helm of a programme he has significantly shaped, poised to build upon the established championship culture and continue the pursuit of further success at the University of Michigan.
