Cheltenham Day 3 Tips: Shantou for Stayers’ Hurdle Glory

Day three at Cheltenham brings a field rich with possibilities, particularly in the Stayers’ Hurdle. The Ryanair Chase now holds the fifth event slot, but the Stayers’ Hurdle is expected to draw significant attention from punters.

Stayers’ Hurdle Focus: Ma Shantou

The Stayers’ Hurdle features past winners Teahupoo and Bob Olinger. However, young, progressive stayers such as Kabral Du Mathan, Honesty Policy and Ma Shantou are also in contention.

Ma Shantou is particularly appealing, having made rapid strides this season. The seven‑year‑old started the campaign in handicaps, and put up an impressive trial in the Cleeve Hurdle in January.

Kabral Du Mathan won the Relkeel Hurdle but his stamina is unproven over three miles. Ma Shantou, a dual winner over track and trip, is favoured.

Other Cheltenham Selections

In the 1.20 race, Bambino Fever and Oldschool Outlaw could be the ones to watch. Oldschool Outlaw is the only horse to have beaten Bambino Fever over hurdles.

The novice handicap chase at the Trials meeting has a good record as a pointer towards the festival. Jordans Cross won this year and was value for more than the narrow margin suggests.

A 6lb rise for that win looks fair for Jordans Cross, especially after Quebecois, the runner-up, franked the form with a third in the Ultima on Tuesday.

Lossiemouth’s switch to the Champion Hurdle leaves Wodhooh with a straightforward task in the 2.40 race.
