Iowa Representative Zach Nunn and other lawmakers are urging the WNBA to improve player safety. They are citing incidents involving West Des Moines native Caitlin Clark, a player for the Indiana Fever.
A group of House lawmakers, led by Iowa Congressman Zach Nunn, are pushing for stronger protections for WNBA players. This initiative specifically includes Indiana Fever guard and West Des Moines native Caitlin Clark.
Congressional Push for Enhanced Safety
In a letter, which was led by Republican Study Committee Chairman August Pfluger of Texas, the lawmakers are urging the WNBA commissioner to enhance player safety. Their demand is to ensure all athletes are protected, both on and off the court.
The letter highlights multiple incidents this season involving Clark. These concerns include her being hip-checked, poked in the eye, and struck in the throat during play.

Representative Zach Nunn stated that he led his colleagues in demanding accountability from the WNBA Commissioner. He cited what he described as multiple attacks against Caitlin Clark.
Call for WNBA Accountability
Congressman Nunn emphasised Clark’s role as a player transforming women’s sports. He added that she is inspiring a new generation of young girls to participate in athletics, and he is “putting the league on notice”.
“Caitlin Clark is one of West Des Moines’ own, and she’s a hero to millions of young girls — including my daughters,” said Representative Zach Nunn. He further stated that she has carried women’s basketball to new heights.
Nunn asserted that Clark has earned the right to compete without being unfairly punched, shoved, and targeted. He noted this is happening while the league, which he says makes a billion dollars off her name, looks the other way.
The letter formally requests a response from the WNBA by July 24.
