Tyler Fletcher has received a World Cup call-up from Scotland manager Steve Clarke.
The Fletcher family had planned to attend the World Cup as fans, after a frustrating end to the season for dad Darren’s Manchester United Under-18 team, who lost two major cup finals, and twin sons Tyler and Jack, who were beaten in another.
Instead of joining Darren and Jack in the stands, Tyler will now be part of Clarke’s squad.
From United Debut to Scotland Squad
Tyler Fletcher’s call-up is reminiscent of when Manchester United’s Norman Whiteside was called into the Northern Ireland World Cup squad in 1982, also after just two senior appearances.
Fletcher made his Scotland debut in Saturday’s friendly win over Curacao.
Clarke’s choice reflects Fletcher’s professionalism, diligence and work ethic in training.
He was called into Clarke’s training camp last week and made a positive impression on Scotland’s coaches.
Fletcher was only held back as an immediate replacement through an element of caution on Clarke’s part, when Billy Gilmour suffered a first-half injury.
Fletcher’s performance when he did come on at half-time was full of maturity.
Tyler Fletcher’s Rise at Man Utd
Tyler Fletcher was crowned United’s Under-21 player of the year.
Tyler was named on the bench for 11 of United’s last 14 games, having initially been called up for the home win over Newcastle on 26 December, a game Jack played in.
Tyler’s debut came as a last-minute replacement for Kobbie Mainoo against Tottenham at Old Trafford on 7 February.
He was the first academy player manager Michael Carrick gave a debut to.
After starting the season slightly behind twin brother Jack, it was Tyler who ended up in front.
Dad Darren’s under-18s also ended an encouraging campaign with the frustration of losing both the FA Youth Cup and Premier League Under-18s finals.
It’s amazing how life works out sometimes.
