Texas Tech Backs Brendan Sorsby After Gambling Admission

Texas Tech are standing by quarterback Brendan Sorsby after his admission to violating NCAA gambling rules. Head coach Joey McGuire has publicly called for Sorsby’s reinstatement. Sorsby, who was a highly sought-after transfer, now faces being permanently ruled ineligible.

Sorsby’s Gambling Admission and NCAA Ruling

Sorsby admitted to betting on Indiana football in 2022 while a member of the team. He also confessed to wagering on basketball games at Indiana University and Cincinnati, among other bets. This admission followed an NCAA notice of an investigation. The NCAA subsequently denied Sorsby’s request to have his eligibility reinstated.

Texas Tech’s Support and Appeal

McGuire stated that Texas Tech will support Sorsby, emphasising his role in developing young men both on and off the field. He believes Sorsby should face consequences for his mistake, but McGuire does not think he should be penalised for the rest of the year or his career. Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec announced the university would welcome Sorsby back to campus and appeal the NCAA’s decision.

Athletic director Kirby Hocutt said the appeal should be finalised by the weekend and a resolution is expected within a few weeks.

Sorsby’s Lawsuit and Proposed Suspension

Sorsby has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA seeking a temporary injunction to grant him eligibility for the 2026 season. Jeffrey Kessler, a prominent sports labour lawyer, is representing Sorsby in the lawsuit. An injunction hearing is scheduled for Monday in Lubbock County district court.

Texas Tech is not involved in the lawsuit. Sorsby revealed in the lawsuit that he offered to serve a two-game suspension, among other conditions, but the NCAA declined to discuss a settlement.

McGuire’s Plea for Sorsby’s Reinstatement

McGuire believes that Texas Tech is the best place for Sorsby to receive help for his gambling problem and that he should be allowed to play. McGuire said Sorsby is ready to serve a penalty but does not believe it should be for the full year.

  • Sorsby was in rehab for a long time.
  • He was told to go home for a few days to take a break.
  • He will be back on campus soon.

McGuire concluded that Texas Tech believes in Sorsby and will support him regardless of the NCAA’s final ruling. Sorsby chose Texas Tech, so he is one of theirs.
