Referee Tony Brothers has become a talking point during the NBA playoffs, drawing criticism for his officiating. The controversy began during the Western Conference semi-finals and has continued into the Western Conference Finals.
Timberwolves’ Frustration with Brothers
The Minnesota Timberwolves experienced frustration with Tony Brothers during their six-game series against the San Antonio Spurs. A heated confrontation in Game 3 of the Western Conference semi-finals put Brothers in the spotlight. By the end of the series, some felt he had become a villain on par with Victor Wembanyama.
In the regular season, Minnesota had a 4-1 record in games officiated by Brothers. Personal fouls were nearly even, with 20.8 called against the Wolves and 20.2 against their opponents. However, the situation escalated in Game 3 due to an incident with Timberwolves coach, Finch.
With the Timberwolves trailing 102-100 and just over five minutes remaining, Finch requested a timeout from Brothers. Brothers initially did not grant the timeout. Finch asked for the time back on the clock, which led to Brothers screaming at Finch. Minnesota players intervened to de-escalate the situation before play resumed.
Finch described the incident as “pretty unprofessional”. He stated he had called for the timeout three seconds earlier, but Brothers ignored him before eventually granting it. The Wolves ultimately lost the game 115-108. Although fouls were at a 25-23 advantage for San Antonio, the Spurs had a 33-21 advantage in free throw attempts.
Controversy Extends to Western Conference Finals
Despite the altercation with Finch, Brothers was not reprimanded by the NBA. He officiated during the Western Conference Finals. His first assignment was Game 2 of the series, which the Thunder won 122-113.
Fouls were even at 21 for each team, but Oklahoma City had a 24-17 advantage at the free throw line. Some felt numerous fouls were called as a result of Thunder players flopping.
Tension peaked in Game 5. With the Spurs trailing 98-88, officials missed a goaltending call against Carson Wallace. Wallace swatted a Luke Kornet tip-in that was still sitting on the rim, out of bounds.
Spurs fans may now understand the Timberwolves’ earlier frustrations with Brothers. San Antonio is one loss away from elimination.
