Spurs Face $87 Million Decision on Julian Champagnie

The San Antonio Spurs face a potentially expensive decision regarding Julian Champagnie this offseason. After a successful 2025-26 season that saw them reach the postseason for the first time since 2018-19, the Spurs will need to consider Champagnie’s contract situation.

Champagnie’s Rise in San Antonio

Julian Champagnie has made a significant leap this season. He will be eligible to sign a four-year, $87 million contract extension with the Spurs if his $3 million team option for next season is not exercised.

Champagnie went undrafted in 2022 and had to prove himself. The Spurs picked him up off waivers in 2022-23, and he has since become an everyday starter. Champagnie climbed the ranks from a two-way player to a standard NBA contract in the summer of 2023.

The fourth-year forward has posted career numbers this season, playing in all 82 regular season games and starting in 68. He has career-highs in points (11.1), rebounds (5.8), and assists (1.5) per game. Champagnie’s ability to knock down three-pointers and his defensive presence have become valuable for the Spurs during their playoff run.

Playoff Impact

Champagnie has continued his strong play into the postseason, starting in all 15 games for the Spurs. He’s averaging 10.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, shooting 43.2% from the field, 36.6% from three-point range, and 83.3% from the free-throw line.

While Victor Wembanyama and Dylan Harper may have gained more attention, Julian Champagnie’s numbers have demonstrated his value to the Spurs.

Other Spurs’ Offseason Priorities

Beyond Champagnie, the Spurs also face other key decisions this offseason. Victor Wembanyama is eligible for a potentially massive rookie extension.

The Spurs can agree to a five-year, $251 million extension with Wembanyama, starting the day after the NBA Finals. The extension could reach $301 million if Wembanyama achieves All-NBA, MVP, or Defensive Player of the Year honours in 2026-27.

The Spurs will also evaluate De’Aaron Fox, alongside the emergence of rookie guard Dylan Harper.

Whether the Spurs extend Champagnie this summer or not, he is in line for a large payday at some point in the future.
