Scott McTominay’s overhead kick that helped Scotland qualify for the World Cup has been commemorated on a new £20 note. The Bank of Scotland unveiled the limited edition note, which marks Scotland’s first appearance at the men’s international tournament since 1998.
The design incorporates imagery of McTominay’s goal against Denmark with traditional banknote features. Scotland secured their place at the World Cup with a 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park in Glasgow.
Limited Edition Note to Mark World Cup Qualification
Only 100 of the limited edition notes have been printed. Fifty of the notes will be available through collector auctions, a prize draw, and pop-up areas in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
McTominay scored the first goal of the match with an overhead kick. He expressed his delight at having his goal featured on a Scottish banknote. “Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans,” said McTominay. “Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special.”
Charity Auction to Support Crisis Scotland
Proceeds from the auction and prize draw will go to Crisis Scotland. The charity supports people experiencing homelessness.
The online auction will run until 11:00 on Friday 26 June, and the prize draw closes at the same time. Two pop-up areas will be set up in Glasgow and Edinburgh, offering fans a chance to win one of the limited edition notes by guessing a combination of numbers to open a vault.
Bank of Scotland Celebrates Scottish Identity
Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, said the note was created to mark Scotland’s dramatic qualification. “Securing qualification in such dramatic fashion is a moment fans will never forget, and we wanted to mark it in a way that’s rooted in Scottish identity,” she stated. “Like football, banknotes have long been part of our country’s story, and this limited edition £20 note combines those two traditions with a modern, creative twist.”
Noble added that McTominay’s overhead kick is considered one of the nation’s greatest goals. She also expressed gratitude for McTominay’s support in raising funds for Crisis.
Scotland are set to face Haiti on 14 June and Morocco on 19 June in Boston and Brazil on 24 June in Miami.
