Seattle Storm’s top rookie, Awa Fam, has arrived from Spain, ready to take on the challenges of the WNBA. Fam, who was drafted No. 3 overall, is not daunted by the move halfway across the globe. She previously left her home in Alicante, Spain, at the age of 12 to play basketball in Valencia.
From Valencia to Seattle
Fam moved away from her family at a young age. At 12, she convinced her parents to let her move from Alicante, Spain, to Valencia, a city 100 miles away, to pursue her basketball career. She explained that Valencia was a big city with a big club, and her family was assured she would be well taken care of, living with another player and having a tutor. This experience has prepared her for the move to Seattle.
Sitting next to her brother Kalim on flights from Madrid, Spain to London and Seattle, Fam focused on the challenge ahead. She signed a four-year rookie contract that pays her a guaranteed $436,016 this season. She sees this as a new life and a challenge she really wants.
First Impressions of Seattle
Fam’s first impression of Seattle is that it is a big city. She was pleasantly surprised by the weather. She had expected rain or cold, but was greeted by sunshine. Fam is looking forward to getting to know more about the city.
Welcome to the Storm
Awa Fam arrived at the Storm practice facility where she was greeted by teammates, coach Sonia Raman, and staff members. Raman described the atmosphere as very celebratory. Her teammates are getting to know her. She watched the team during shoot-around.
Raman said that the team will focus on getting Fam acclimated. They aim to provide her with a full download on their processes. They also intend to tap into Fam’s strengths and incorporate them into the playbook.
What Fam Brings to the Team
Raman didn’t give a specific timetable on when Fam would make her WNBA debut. The Storm, who started the season 1-4, could benefit from the addition of the 6-foot-4 centre. Fam averaged 9.2 points and 4.9 rebounds while helping Valencia Basket to a Liga Femenina Endesa championship.
- She brings size.
- She brings shooting.
- She brings playmaking.
- She brings an ability to defend and protect the rim.
Raman said that Fam is a high-level basketball player.
Raman noted the team is just getting Fam acclimated and giving her the full download on what they do and how they do it.
