Browns Rookie QB Taylen Green Hopes to Secure Roster Spot

The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation is a talking point as rookie Taylen Green aims to secure a place on the roster.

Deshaun Watson is trying to revive his career, while Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel are competing for a chance to start. Green, a rookie from Arkansas, has also entered the fray.

Green’s Athleticism Stands Out

Green began his college career at Boise State, spending two years with the Broncos before transferring to Arkansas. His athletic profile is a key attribute. He stands at 6’6 and weighs 227 lbs.

Green’s athletic profile is something that NFL general managers like in quarterbacks. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was valued coming out of school because of his athletic ability and arm talent.

Green showed his athleticism at the NFL Combine this past February.

Areas for Improvement

While Green has the physical tools, he is still a project. His footwork needs work, and he has to improve his ability to read through his progressions. He sometimes looks for the big play instead of taking easier options.

Green started over 46 games in college. He needs to improve in key areas if he wants to have an NFL career as a quarterback.

Green can improve his footwork by learning to quiet his feet and improve his lower body mechanics. He also needs to work on his accuracy on short throws.

Potential Role with the Browns

Green has potential as a runner and could be used in RPO situations, which the Browns offense will use. He has a chance to make the roster, and it is unlikely he would clear waivers if the Browns cut him.

If the Browns have to choose between Gabriel or Green, Green is likely to make the roster. Gabriel may be further along in terms of the mental side of playing quarterback, but his skillset does not fit the Browns’ current offensive scheme.

There is no rush to play Green right away, but he could be QB3 on the roster and potentially develop if the team sticks with him.
