Green Bay Packers Release Elgton Jenkins, Save $19.5M

The Green Bay Packers have released Elgton Jenkins. The move will net the Packers more than $19.5 million in additional salary cap space for this season.

Jenkins’ Contract and Position Change

Jenkins, 30, had one year remaining on a four-year, $68 million extension. At the time, this made him one of the highest-paid guards in the NFL. He made the Pro Bowl as a left guard twice (2020, 2022).

A year ago, when the Packers signed guard Aaron Banks in free agency, they asked Jenkins to move to centre. Jenkins skipped most of the offseason program in part because he wanted the Packers to adjust his contract. He wanted to ensure he had more guaranteed money to offset potential earnings losses that might come by changing to a less lucrative position, but the Packers refused to alter his deal.

Sudden End to Jenkins’ Season and Packers Career

Jenkins started the first nine games of 2025 at centre. A fractured ankle on Nov. 10 against the Eagles ended his season.

The Packers informed Jenkins of his release one day after they signed his replacement at centre, Sean Rhyan, to a three-year, $33 million contract Sunday.

Changing of the Guard in Green Bay

With the release of Jenkins and the trade earlier on Monday that sent Rashan Gary to the Cowboys, quarterback Jordan Love was left as the longest-tenured Packers player still on the roster.

Both Jenkins and Gary were drafted by the Packers in 2019, one year before Love.
