Hansi Flick has lauded the Premier League as the ‘best in the world’ as his Barcelona side prepares to face Newcastle United in the Champions League round of 16. The Barcelona coach acknowledged the financial power and quality within the English top flight ahead of Tuesday’s first leg at St. James’ Park.
Barcelona Prepare for St James’ Park Atmosphere
Flick anticipates a challenging encounter against Newcastle, particularly with their home support. He noted the intense atmosphere that Barcelona will face. According to Flick, Newcastle will press high and play an intense game.
“The Champions League is different,” Flick said, acknowledging Newcastle’s potential. He believes Newcastle will show their best in this stage of the competition. He described Newcastle as a team in transition with very fast, good, outstanding players.
Barcelona’s Injury Concerns
Barcelona will be without Jules Koundé, Alejandro Balde, Andreas Christensen, Gavi and Frenkie de Jong for the match. However, Marc Bernal is available after recovering from a stomach problem.
Rashford in Contention
Marcus Rashford could feature in Flick’s plans, having made his first start in a month in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Athletic Club. Flick stated that Rashford was injured and out for some games, but is now back. He added that he has not decided yet, but Rashford is a good option.
Flick’s Vision for Barcelona
Flick emphasised Barcelona’s desire to play in their own style in the Champions League. “We want to play like Barça, also in the Champions League,” he stated. “Our supporters are proud about the way we play football. This is what we want to show tomorrow.”
This week’s meeting will be the second between the two teams in the Champions League this season, with Barça winning 2-1 in the league phase at Newcastle back in September.
The tie will be determined on March 18 at Spotify Camp Nou.
