Cheltenham Festival: Saratoga Wins McCoy Contractors Juvenile Hurdle

The Cheltenham Festival witnessed some fantastic racing. Saratoga, ridden by Mark Walsh, won the McCoy Contractors Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. However, the day was also marked by the sad news of Hansard’s death after The Arkle.

Saratoga’s Triumph in the McCoy Contractors Juvenile Handicap Hurdle

Saratoga, a 10-1 shot, secured a fine victory in the McCoy Contractors Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. Owned by JP McManus, the six-year-old was well-backed. Mark Walsh delivered an excellent ride, holding the horse back until the opportune moment.

J P McManus told ITV that every winner at Cheltenham is very special. He added that they were hoping the ground would be fast because Saratoga thrives on it. According to McManus, the horse bounces off the ground like a rubber ball. He celebrated his birthday with the win. He told BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, “Great to celebrate it [birthday] with a winner, especially at Cheltenham”.

Mark Walsh said he had a brilliant run with a good start. He felt the force the whole way, maintaining a good gallop. He is looking forward to riding every race.

Charlie Poste described Saratoga as a real quality winner. He noted the horse travelled well, jumped well at the last, and sprinted away. Vanessa Ryle reported that Saratoga has dotted up and the handbrake has been taken off.

Early Race Action and a Fall

Paddockwood initially set a scorching tempo, establishing a five-length lead. However, the horse was caught again with six hurdles remaining. Klycot, the only grey in the field, moved into the lead with three to go. Ole Ole fell near the back, but both horse and jockey appeared to be alright. Over the last, Saratoga and Klycot were leading the way.

Hansard’s Fatal Injury

Hansard, the 100-1 outsider in The Arkle, suffered an injury. The injury occurred while running on the flat towards the end of the race, not from a fall. On-course vets attended to Hansard but decided to put the horse down.

The Cheltenham Festival continues with more racing action. The place is buzzing. The Old Park Star competed in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.
