Brook Lopez’s time as a starting LA Clipper may be over, after coach Tyronn Lue recognised his defensive limitations. Fans had already identified Lopez’s immobility as a weakness. Lue responded by starting Isaiah Jackson in the second half of their match against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Jackson’s Impact Leads to Lopez’s Bench Time
Lue stuck with Jackson for the remainder of the game. Jackson played more than twice as many minutes as Lopez, who did not play at all in the third quarter. The change appeared to be the difference, as the Clippers secured a narrow three-point victory, avoiding consecutive losses.
The contrast between Lopez and Jackson highlights the importance of reaction time and quickness at the center position. Lue now faces a decision about who should start moving forward. Logic suggests Lue should favour Jackson, who is 13 years younger than Lopez.
Jackson’s Performance Against the Grizzlies
Jackson strengthened his case to start with his performance against the Memphis Grizzlies. He posted a game-high 12 rebounds, along with 12 points, two steals, and a block. Jackson shot 6-10 from the field in a game the Clippers needed to win.
However, his performance was not consistent throughout the game. In the first half, playing with the second unit, Jackson was scoreless and missed two free throws. He grabbed some rebounds but otherwise simply tried to do what was asked of him. This has been his standard since arriving in LA.
The game changed when Jackson realised Lue had enough confidence in him to start the third quarter. From that point on, he scored all of his points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had a much-needed impact.
Jackson’s Fit With Key Players
Jackson appears to be a good fit with the lineup led by Darius Garland and Kawhi Leonard. He brings burst, agility, lateral speed, and a faster-paced style of play to the team.
Lue should take Jackson’s second-half argument into account. The Clippers face the New York Knicks next, and an adjustment may be needed immediately.
