Alex Fitzpatrick Leads Truist Championship as McIlroy Struggles

Alex Fitzpatrick is in the lead at the Truist Championship after a round of 64. He holds a one-shot lead over Kristoffer Reitan. Cameron Young is in third place after carding a 63.

Fitzpatrick Seizes the Lead

Alex Fitzpatrick’s 64 propelled him to the top of the leaderboard at Quail Hollow. He now has a one-shot lead heading into the final round. Fitzpatrick’s round included eight birdies, moving him to 14 under par.

This comes shortly after Fitzpatrick and his brother, Matt, won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans pairs event last month. That victory secured a two-year tour card for Alex Fitzpatrick.

Kristoffer Reitan of Norway also shot a 64 and is one stroke behind Fitzpatrick.

McIlroy’s Difficult Day

Rory McIlroy, a four-time winner at Quail Hollow, had a disappointing Saturday. He carded a four-over-par 75. McIlroy’s struggles dropped him out of contention.

Six bogeys contributed to McIlroy’s slide down the leaderboard. He now sits at one under par, 13 shots behind the leader.

Young in Contention

Cameron Young recorded the lowest round of the day, an eight-under 63. He is now in third place at 12 under. Young’s only dropped shot came at the 18th.

Sungjae Im, who led at the halfway point, is now at 10 under after a 70. Nicolai Hojgaard is also at 10 under after shooting a 67.

Fleetwood and Others in the Hunt

Tommy Fleetwood remains in contention after a 70. He is tied for sixth at nine under par alongside Justin Thomas.

Alex Fitzpatrick said he embraced the support he received during his round. He added that he would love to win, but as long as he enjoys it, that is all he can do.

The Fitzpatrick brothers winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans secured a two-year tour card for Alex Fitzpatrick.
