Calabria Sailing Project Launches: Students Embark on Barca Adventure

A regional educational and sports project called “Calabria in barca a vela 2026” has commenced in Corigliano Rossano. It involves students from 14 sports high schools in Calabria, offering a formative experience encompassing sport, environment, and regional appreciation.

Inaugural Stage and Activities

The opening day, supported by the Municipality of Corigliano-Rossano, was organised by the IIS L. Palma Green Falcone Borsellino, led by Head Teacher Dr Cinzia D’Amico. Activities were coordinated with involved teachers and the collaboration of the IC “Leonetti–Guidi”. The schedule included a gathering at the Palmeto di Schiavonea, where, following greetings from authorities, sporting activities and tournaments took place.

The event officially launched the initiative. Students then boarded at the Port of Corigliano for the first leg of their journey towards Cariati.

The Project’s Aims

The “Calabria in barca a vela 2026” project is an innovative educational path. It merges sporting activities in a natural environment with education on sustainability, and the discovery of Calabria’s landscape and cultural heritage. Through life on board and navigation along the regional coasts, students will have the opportunity to deepen their sailing techniques.

They will also develop skills related to responsibility, collaboration, and active citizenship.

Coastal Route and Participating Schools

Following the initial Corigliano–Cariati leg, the journey will continue along the Calabrian coasts. It will traverse both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian sides, in a widespread educational route that will progressively touch the main locations of the region.

The subsequent stages will be entrusted, in rotation, to the different Sports High Schools and institutes belonging to the network. Each will be responsible for organising their own day of welcome and the educational-sporting activities connected to navigation. These are the Calabrian Sports High Schools involved: IIS L. Palma Green Falcone Borsellino Corigliano-Rossano; LS “Julia” Acri; LS “Filolao” Crotone; LS “E. Fermi” Catanzaro; IIS “Z. Bianco” Gioiosa Ionica; IIS “M. La Cava” Bovalino; LS “M. Guerrisi” Cittanova; LS “A. Volta” Reggio Calabria; LS “Nostro Repaci” Villa San Giovanni; IIS “N. Pizi” Palmi; IIS “Piria” Rosarno; LS “Berto” Vibo Valentia; IIS “Valentini Majorana” Castrolibero; IIS Cetraro.

Journey’s End

The route (Corigliano Rossano – Cariati – Le Castella – Catanzaro Lido – Roccella Ionica – Reggio Calabria – Tropea – Cetraro – Vibo Marina – Reggio C. – Roccella I – Catanzaro L. – Crotone – Cirò Marina) will conclude with a final stage of synthesis and restitution. This is scheduled for June 4, during which the students will present the results of the experiences gained on board and in the various ports of arrival.

The project is promoted and coordinated by the USR for Calabria – General Management.
