José “Piculín’ Ortiz, a significant figure in Puerto Rican basketball history, has died following a battle with colorectal cancer. The Basketball Federation of Puerto Rico confirmed that he passed away on Tuesday. Ortiz was 60 years old.
Diagnosis and Final Days
Ortiz was diagnosed with the illness in late 2023. He had been hospitalised at Hospital Ashford since Friday, 1 May. His wife Sylvia Ríos, his daughter Neira, and other family members were with him.
Early Life and BSN Career
Born in Aibonito on 25 October 1963, Ortiz was raised in Cayey. Initially, he played baseball and volleyball during his school years. His height of 6’11” soon made basketball an obvious choice.
Ortiz debuted in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) in 1981, playing for the Atléticos de San Germán at just 17 years old. He played 14 seasons with the team, winning three BSN titles. His number 4 was retired by San Germán in 2019.
During his time with San Germán, he was nicknamed “El Concorde” by commentator Manuel Rivera Morales.
From 1998 to 2005, Ortiz also played for the Cangrejeros de Santurce, adding five more championship trophies to his record.
International Career Highlights
Ortiz achieved significant success with the national basketball team. He played in five FIBA World Cups (1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002) and four Olympic Games (1998, 1992, 1996, and 2004). He also won multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals in various tournaments, including the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Games.
