Joel Piroe’s future at Leeds United hangs in the balance as he approaches a potential summer transfer audition. The FA Cup match against Norwich City could be his last chance to shine at Elland Road.
Piroe’s Diminished Role at Leeds
Piroe’s status has declined significantly in less than a season. He went from being a central figure in Leeds’ attack, celebrated by fans, to a player on the fringes. The 19 goals he scored last May feel like a distant memory, as he has struggled for game time under Daniel Farke this season.
Despite interest in January, Piroe opted to stay and fight for his place in the second half of the season. Leeds see the value in keeping him as a backup, especially after failing to secure Jorgen Strand Larsen in January, and given Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha’s injury records.
FA Cup Clash: A Potential Turning Point
Piroe will be hoping for an opportunity against Norwich. He started Leeds’ first two games of the season against Everton and Arsenal, but hasn’t started in the Premier League since. He is yet to score this season, despite starts in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. His absence from the starting XI in the Birmingham City FA Cup win was telling.
Farke has praised Piroe’s finishing ability, but seemingly does not trust him in the same way as he did at Championship level. He is perceived as lacking the pace to trouble defences and the strength to outmuscle centre-backs, qualities that Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin possess.
Summer Transfer Possibilities
The home game against Norwich may be Piroe’s last chance to start a game for Leeds. His contract runs until 2027, with an option for an additional year, but a parting of ways seems likely, particularly if Leeds avoid relegation this season.
If Norwich cause an upset, Piroe is unlikely to feature in the starting XI again this term. A lack of game time could deter potential suitors. A strong performance against Norwich could earn him more minutes, while a poor showing could further marginalise him.
Piroe is in a difficult position, seemingly too good for the Championship but not quite at the level required for the Premier League. Time is running out for him to change that perception. Hopefully for him, Piroe will get one last chance to shine at Leeds.
Selection Dilemma After Sunderland Loss
Following Leeds’ disappointing 1-0 home loss to Sunderland, Farke faces a big selection dilemma ahead of facing Norwich.
If Piroe is handed an opportunity against Norwich, he simply has to take it. This could even be a summer audition for a better transfer move.
