Ajax and PSV Clash as Eindhoven Seek First Win in Three Years

Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven are set to face Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena. PSV will be aiming to break their four-match winless streak in De Topper. The reverse fixture saw PSV concede an 88th-minute equaliser, and they now seek their first victory in three years while potentially disrupting Ajax’s European ambitions.

PSV’s Bid to Overcome Ajax

PSV Eindhoven’s last win against Ajax came in Peter Bosz’s first derby as PSV boss, a 5-2 success. Since then, PSV have been unable to replicate that result, with two losses and two draws against Ajax. Bosz, a former Ajax head coach, aims to get the better of his old team. Despite already securing their 27th title and a third consecutive league title, PSV are motivated to end their three-year wait for a win over Ajax.

Ajax’s Unbeaten Run

Following a 5-2 defeat to PSV in October 2023, Ajax, then managed by Hedwiges Maduro, began an unbeaten run. That defeat in Eindhoven marked their sixth consecutive disappointment in this fixture. However, the Amsterdam outfit have since turned things around, with six straight defeats now replaced by an unbeaten streak.

European Ambitions at Stake

Ajax, now managed by Oscar Garcia, are aiming to extend their unbeaten sequence to six matches. They last achieved a similar run between March 2019 and February 2021. Joint top of the form table across the past five rounds, Ajax have earned 10 points. Maximum points would keep them in fourth spot, ahead of FC Twente on goal difference, if Twente beat AZ Alkmaar. Furthermore, if NEC drop points against Telstar, the Amsterdam giants could leapfrog them into third in the Eredivisie table.

PSV’s Strong Away Record

PSV have reason to be optimistic ahead of Saturday’s trip, given their strong away record. They have secured 13 wins in 15 matches. However, both of their away losses have come in their most recent five matches on the road: a 2-1 defeat to FC Volendam and a 3-1 reverse.

PSV do not enter gameweek 32 in any danger of losing their position or in any jeopardy, with their 27th title already sewn up.
