Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent has been confirmed as Christian Mbilli. Alvarez is set to challenge Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight championship in September.
Alvarez Returns After Crawford Defeat
Alvarez last fought in September, suffering a loss to Terence Crawford at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. He lost his undisputed super-middleweight crown in the process. Crawford’s subsequent retirement led to the fragmentation of the world titles.
Alvarez’s return to the ring was announced earlier this year. He will now face one of the newly-crowned world champions.
Mbilli Gets Title Shot
According to The Ring, the fight between Alvarez and Mbilli is a done deal. It is scheduled for September in Riyadh. The fight will be for the WBC super middleweight championship.
Christian Mbilli was previously the WBC interim super-middleweight champion. His recent fights include a first round stoppage win over Maciej Sulecki in June 2025. He also had a draw against Lester Martinez three months later.
Despite the draw, Mbilli was elevated to full WBC champion. He had expressed his eagerness to fight Canelo in recent weeks.
Mbilli will now face Alvarez in a major fight this year.
Two Top Fighters Set to Collide
Mbilli will now get his wish, as two of the best 168lb fighters prepare to collide later this year.
