Raoni Barcelos is looking to take on a top-ranked opponent as he prepares to battle Montel Jackson at UFC Vegas 116 on April 25.
The Brazilian bantamweight, who will turn 39 shortly after the match, already has his next targets in mind as he aims to quickly climb to the top of the division.
Barcelos Wants Figueiredo Fight
Currently enjoying a four-fight winning streak, Barcelos has named Marlon Vera and Deiveson Figueiredo as potential future opponents, provided he is victorious against Montel Jackson.
Barcelos suggested that Figueiredo might be the more likely of the two to accept a fight, given Vera’s current three-fight losing streak.
Barcelos acknowledged that calling out a fellow Brazilian is a bold move for him.
“I think Deiveson Figueiredo would be a great fight. I respect him and his team a lot,” Barcelos said.
He added, “I don’t have time to keep chasing things. I’ve already had an eight-year career in the UFC so I think it’s my moment now.”
Figueiredo’s Record at Bantamweight
Figueiredo’s last UFC win was a decision against Montel Jackson in October, before losing to Umar Nurmagomedov. The former UFC flyweight champion holds a 4-3 record since moving up to bantamweight, including victories over Vera, Garbrandt and Rob Font.
Barcelos considers Figueiredo a well-rounded and dangerous opponent.
“Deiveson is an outstanding athlete too, very heavy hands, very complete, both in striking and in jiu-jitsu and wrestling,” Barcelos said. “I also consider myself a complete fighter. I think it would be a great fight. Intense, fast-paced, very active. I think the fans would really enjoy it.”
Barcelos Focused on Grappling
Barcelos watched Figueiredo beat Jackson via split decision and decided he would call out Jackson following the Ricky Simon bout.
The UFC granted his wish, scheduling the fight at the Meta APEX on April 25.
“I want to stick to my grappling and wrestling game,” Barcelos said. “My jiu-jitsu is very strong and sharp right now and I plan to use it in the fight.”
He added that he believes that style causes the most problems for opponents in his division.
Barcelos is confident on getting the job done.
