Bruno Fernandes Reveals Training Ground Clashes at Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes has admitted that his relentless intensity on the training pitch at Manchester United would frequently spark “fights” with former coach Mitchell van der Gaag.

The United captain said he is not one for taking it easy during training sessions.

Fernandes’ Training Ground Intensity

Fernandes revealed that the clashes with Van der Gaag, who was part of Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff, would arise over minor issues during training. Fernandes told The Telegraph that the disagreements were not malicious and were driven by his desire to win.

He believes that his attitude impacts the rest of the squad. “If I don’t put that into training, if I’m not that guy, the other ones will probably drop a bit the intensity,” he said.

Fernandes added, “I know certain players, they look at me and need to see me alive to understand that I’m in the game. Sometimes I need to be that guy that puts the energy, that shouts, that does things for the other ones to become better because I can do that and still focus.”

Leadership During Turbulent Times

Fernandes’ dedication to the captain’s armband highlights his intensity and winning mentality. It also shows a lighter side to a player who has been important in guiding United through some difficult periods in recent years.

Fernandes has been willing to make his presence felt, during a period where pundits have called for leaders to emerge at Old Trafford.

Van der Gaag’s Departure

Van der Gaag left United in July 2024 to pursue a more senior managerial role. He later took charge at Zurich for just under six months.

His departure from Old Trafford occurred shortly before Ten Hag was sacked a few months later. Van der Gaag managed United himself in November 2023, leading the team to a 3-0 victory at Everton while Ten Hag was suspended.

Fernandes’ leadership approach has been adopted at.
