Barcelona’s Champions League campaign ended in controversy, with Raphinha leading the criticism of the refereeing during their tie against Atlético Madrid.
Atlético Madrid Advance to Semi-Finals
Atlético Madrid secured their place in the Bigger Cup semi-finals. They overcame Barcelona in a tie marked by drama and contentious decisions.
Ademola Lookman, a Charlton Athletic academy graduate, scored the decisive goal. This sent Atlético Madrid into the semi-finals.
Diego Simeone expressed his delight: “Playing in a [Bigger Cup] semi-final, how wonderful,” he honked before an appointment with Arsenal or Sporting. “We’ll go there with all our enthusiasm and faith. We know our strengths and weaknesses. We’re ready.”
Raphinha’s Accusations of Robbery
Raphinha did not hold back in his assessment of the officiating. He accused the referee, Clément Turpin, of bias against Barcelona.
“We played really well, but this tie was robbed from us,” fumed the Brazilian after the game. “Not just this match but the other one as well. The refereeing was really bad, the decisions [Turpin] makes are unbelievable. I really want to understand why they’re so afraid that Barcelona will come and win.”
Raphinha’s outburst could result in a ban. Precedent suggests he can look forward to at least a three-match ban for intemperate language unbecoming of a frustrated and petulant footballer.
Controversial Refereeing Decisions
Raphinha was particularly aggrieved by what he perceived as a reluctance to book Atlético players. He also highlighted the denial of two penalties across both legs as further evidence of bias.
Barcelona had players sent off in both legs of the tie. However, the source reported that neither decision seemed particularly egregious.
Juan Musso dismissed the claims of robbery. “You can’t say this match was stolen from them; that’s ridiculous,” honked Musso, as he wiped the blood from the sole of his boot. “They acted as if they should have had three penalties and we should have had four sendings-off. We won on the pitch and when you’re the last man back, you get a red card.”
Early Goals and Missed Opportunities
The match saw a flurry of goals in the opening 30 minutes. Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres both scored for Barcelona.
Lamine Yamal’s cross in the buildup to one chance was a highlight. The 18-year-old arced the ball directly into the path of Fermín López with the outside of his left boot.
López was denied by a save from Juan Musso. Had López scored, Barcelona would have gone 3-0 up on the night and ahead in the tie.
Atlético Madrid now look ahead to the Bigger Cup semi-finals, with head coach Diego Simeone expressing enthusiasm and faith in his team’s chances.
