Lhuan-dre Pretorius, the talked-about teenager in South African cricket, is making his debut for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL. The 20-year-old left-hander is playing against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
A Record-Breaking Start
Pretorius has already broken records. In June 2025, he became the youngest South African to score a Test century on debut. He smashed 153 against Zimbabwe, breaking a record held since the 1960s by Graeme Pollock.
A wicketkeeper-batter, Pretorius plays with fearless aggression. His bat swing has been compared to Quinton de Kock, and his strike rate rarely drops below 150 in the shorter formats.
Royals Flex Their Depth
Rajasthan Royals are currently atop the table with a 4-0 record. Captain Riyan Parag has chosen to utilise the team’s bench strength.
By including Pretorius in the middle order, RR aims to counter Hyderabad’s batting with an aggressive left-right combination. Shimron Hetmyer has been handed a “rest”.
Made for Pace
Growing up on the bouncy tracks of South Africa, Pretorius is suited to the fast surface of the Uppal stadium. He first gained attention during the 2024 U19 World Cup, where he was South Africa’s leading run-scorer.
- Youngest South African to score a Test century on debut

His transition to senior cricket was fast, dominating the SA20 with the Paarl Royals before being signed by the Rajasthan franchise.
All eyes will be on the young Protea as the floodlights come on in Hyderabad. If his debut in international cricket is anything to go by, the Orange Army bowlers could be in for a long night.
