Toto Wolff Defends New F1 Regulations Amidst Driver Criticism

Toto Wolff has delivered a strong verdict, defending the new F1 regulations amid some criticism. According to Wolff, 90 per cent of fans are enjoying the current racing spectacle.

F1 has undergone regulation changes this year, with modifications made to the power units and aerodynamics. Mercedes has started the season strongly, achieving 1-2 finishes in the first two races.

Driver Disapproval and Fan Enjoyment

The increase in energy harvesting and deployment has resulted in drivers overtaking rivals on the straights. However, some drivers have criticised the new rules. Max Verstappen has labelled the new cars “anti-racing”.

Wolff has stated that the priority is on what the fans enjoy. He noted that some drivers are experiencing problems with the complex electronic management. “The main target group, however, is the fans, and over 90 per cent of them think we now have entertaining racing: entertaining and exciting.”

The Need for Evolution in F1

F1’s new power units have seen a major increase in the electrical output, bringing it level with the combustion engine.

Wolff highlighted the necessity for F1 to move on from the previous era. “In sports, you always have to evolve.”

He acknowledged the need to respect different viewpoints. “You should respect both sides: the opinions of the traditionalists who want the sport to stay the way it used to be, and those of the new fans who say, ‘We actually like it the way it is now, and that’s how it should stay’.”

“We have to evaluate what’s best for F1 and its fans. At the moment, we see a clear direction.”

F1 continues to evaluate what is best for the sport and its fans.
