The Octagon returned to Miami with UFC 327: Procházka vs Ulberg. The event is headlined by a main event between Jiří Procházka and Carlos Ulberg for the vacant, undisputed UFC light heavyweight championship.
Holland vs Brown: A Back-and-Forth Battle
Kevin Holland and Randy Brown kicked off the action with a back-and-forth battle. Brown appeared to be the more effective of the two in the opening stanza, cutting Holland under the right eye and landing the heavier blows during the first five minutes. Holland responded with a deep anaconda choke attempt in the second that was close, but he was forced to abandon it.
The third was spent largely in the clinch, both men trading short shots, leaving the verdict in the hands of the judges.
Holland came away with the win, getting himself back in the win column while earning his 16th UFC victory. This was a strong showing for the ever-active “Trail Blazer,” who will make his 30th UFC start next time out.
Gamrot’s Ground Game Secures Victory
Mateusz Gamrot defended his position in the lightweight rankings for the second time in 12 months, grounding and submitting Esteban Ribovics in the second round.
The Polish veteran needed one takedown in each round to put Ribovics on the mat and keep him there. While he wasn’t able to do much damage in the first or attack any submissions in the first, Gamrot found an opening in the second, clamping onto an arm-triangle choke and floating into side control to secure the finish.
Gamrot turned in a similarly impressive effort against Ludovit Klein last year — minus the finish — before dropping a short-notice assignment against Charles Oliveira in Rio de Janeiro last October. A menace on the canvas and a threat to beat anyone stationed behind him in the division, Gamrot remains a vital figure in the lightweight ecosystem.
Suarez Dominates Godinez with Second-Round Submission
Tatiana Suarez reminded everyone of her elite status in the strawweight division, submitting Loopy Godinez in the second round.
Suarez got blasted with a right hand in the opening exchange that shook her and gave Godinez an early opening. But Suarez was able to clear her head and wrestle her way back in the fight, controlling the majority of the round on the canvas. In the second, she was right back in on the takedown, quickly working to the back.
