Michael Edwards has been mooted for a Liverpool exit amid rumours that he’s unsettled. This comes as Liverpool are expected to see plenty of change this summer, with a number of high-profile departures on the cards.
Mohamed Salah is leaving Liverpool after nine years. Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate have contracts expiring at the end of the season, and Arne Slot’s future is far from certain.
Frustration Over Multi-Club Plan
Reports suggest Edwards is frustrated at Liverpool after the collapse of his multi-club plan. He could be next out the exit door.
Edwards has been a huge part of the success Liverpool have had since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp ten years ago. He is partly responsible for the incredible run of successful recruitment that brought the Reds back to the top of the sport.
Sizeable Paycheck
Edwards would be forfeiting a rather sizeable paycheck if he leaves Liverpool. Without diminishing all he has done, the salary he is earning at Liverpool beggars belief.
Matt Slater, senior writer for The Athletic, thinks he is going to go, but it would be costly for the Reds.
As Slater explains: “I genuinely think that Michael Edwards is going to go. You know, I don’t see that relationship lasting. What is he doing? He hasn’t got a job at the moment. He was working for FSG. His title was an FSG job. They’re paying him a fortune. They should shake hands.”
Edwards earns £10 million a year, considerably more than Liverpool legend Alisson Becker.
Negotiating an Exit
Slater thinks Liverpool can avoid such a huge cost if they are to part ways. “I think we’re in a bit of a standoff there, aren’t we? He’s paid big money. I’m hearing like £10 million, you know, huge salary, right? To make him go, what? He’s got a year and a half. £15 million and shake his hand? No, there’s a conversation to be had there. There’s a deal to be done.”
Slater isn’t on about a deal to keep him at Anfield, but rather one to let him go for a figure that doesn’t reach those ridiculous heights.
As he rightly alludes to, Edwards doesn’t have a role at Liverpool now after FSG cancelled the multi-club plan that was to be his charge.
An exit makes sense, but hopefully not for a price that would get you a decent squad player in today’s market.
