Nashville SC and Club América are preparing to face each other in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Nashville previously eliminated Inter Miami from the competition, despite a 1-1 scoreline, due to the away goals rule after 180 minutes.
A Previous Encounter
These two teams have met before in the Leagues Cup. Those matches both ended in draws. Nashville won both encounters on penalties.
A Rescheduled Clash
The last time these two were set to face off, it resulted in one of the more unique matches in CONCACAF Champions Cup history. Their quarter-final series was originally scheduled for mid-March 2020. However, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The match was delayed nine months, eventually taking place on 16 December as a single match in Los Angeles. Cruz Azul initially took the lead. LAFC then overturned the score with goals from Carlos Vela and Kwadwo Opoku. LAFC eventually reached the final of the competition, where they were defeated by Tigres in a match without public attendance.
MLS vs Liga MX
The CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-finals will see direct competition between MLS and Liga MX teams. All teams outside of Mexico and the United States have been eliminated from the competition. This phase will determine which teams advance.
The competition saw the elimination of Alajuelense, Vancouver Whitecaps and Mount Pleasant. Alajuelense came closest to continuing, losing 3-2 to LAFC.
With Inter Miami’s elimination, the possibility of Lionel Messi lifting the trophy is over.
Looking Ahead
The CONCACAF Champions Cup continues with MLS and Liga MX teams battling for a place in the next round.
